More than twenty years ago, while I was a student, I first learned about this amazing breed of dogs. It happened when I was studying ancient religions at the university. I was struck by the fact that the brutal cultures of the Incas and Aztecs treated dogs with great respect and reverence, despite their cruelty. The name of the breed, Xoloitzcuintli, reflects this attitude, consisting of two Aztec words: Xolotl, meaning the god of lightning and death, and itzcuintli, meaning "dog." Since then, I began diligently seeking information about these unusual creatures, gathering it piece by piece from various sources.
Unfortunately, at that time, as an ordinary student, I could not afford to get a Xolo puppy. At that time, there were only a few hundred of them on the entire planet, and they were declared a national treasure of Mexico, prohibited from being exported out of the country. It was so unattainable that it seemed incredible that I would ever have such a dog.
But time passed, and with each passing year, more and more people learned about Xoloitzcuintli and admired them. The population of these dogs gradually grew, and my dream, which seemed impossible, finally came true. Now, in my family, there lives a true miracle – a purebred Xoloitzcuintli female with the majestic name Serena Elements of Life, but at home, we simply call her Volya. This name also has a sacred meaning. In Ukrainian, it translates to freedom and strength, the desire and ability of a person to achieve their goals by overcoming all obstacles. It symbolizes my life and my path.
In my life, there have been other dogs – beautiful, smart, and of course, loved. But Xolo is something completely special. They cannot be perceived as ordinary animals. Their skin feels similar to human skin, they tan and darken in the sun like people, and even suffer from adolescent skin problems. These features make them unique and confirm that the ancients knew more when they pointed to their divine or otherworldly origin.
Xoloitzcuintli have become an integral part of my life, and I am grateful to fate that I can now share each day with them. They are not just pets but true companions who fill my life with special meaning and joy.
The differences between Xolo and ordinary dogs
These are just my personal experiences and comments, and my conclusions are not intended to hurt the feelings of other dogs.
Xoloitzcuintli can be either hairless or coated, and they come in three sizes – small, medium, and standard – catering to various tastes and preferences. However, despite this diversity, they belong to a single breed – Xoloitzcuintli, also known as the Mexican Hairless Dog.
In my personal experience, these dogs are very sensible – they don't display unwarranted aggression, don't bark without reason, and are generally quite quiet compared to regular dogs. As an ordinary person, I find it very unpleasant when even a small dog starts barking at me or a my child without any reason or tries to bite. All the Xolo dogs I have seen do not behave like this at all, and for me, this is a huge advantage.
The hairless ones have skin similar to human skin – they tan in the sun, and they also feel cold. In their adolescent years, from 12 to 24 months, they face skin problems like acne and blackheads, just like human teenagers.
The gene for hairlessness is associated with their dental structure – hairless Xolo dogs have incomplete dental rows and weak teeth, so they cannot bite hard or cause serious injury – it is simply impossible.
